jazz school UK CERTIFICATE AND diploma

Q HOW LONG WILL THE FULL PATHWAY TAKE?

A This will depend on the aspirations, ability and endeavour of the individual. A player starting at entry level (ie roughly Associated Boards Jazz Grade 5) might have to complete 3 or 4 certificates before joining the diploma pathway, whereas an intermediate player might do so straight after the first certificate.

Q HOW DOES THE JAZZ SCHOOL UK CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMME COMPARE WITH OTHER SIMILAR OFFERINGS?

A • teaching is carried out by professional players teaching at Conservatoire level
• the structure and content of the course are at least equal and in most cases superior to those offered by jazz degree courses
• our levels 1-2 are pre-university playing standard; our levels 3-4 are undergraduate and postgraduate playing standard
• following the normal pattern of education programmes, our system is based on a system of credits - one credit represents 10 hours of notional learning (a combination of contact hours and personal study) and each season represents 60 credits. Thus each Jazz School UK certificate and diploma part represents 120 credits - the equivalent of a year of full-time study at a College, University or Conservatoire.
• as the course will not undergo any evaluation or validation by outside institutions the certificates and diploma we offer are not 'formal' qualifications, and none of the credits achieved can be transferred
• In terms of fees, here are the comparative costs of 60 credits:
Open University module £2786
Conservatoire (one semester) £4500
Jazz School UK season £1750

Q Where do the sessions take place?

A The venue for the ensemble course days and lessons is the Shoefactory at Rushden, a beautiful Victorian building (with a grand piano in all three playing spaces), which is also the home of Jazz School UK founders Nick Weldon and Andra Sparks. More details, maps and links can be found on our About Us page.

Learning at Jazz School UK is based on a specific set of skills (and related areas of understanding) needed for jazz small group playing. We organise these skills into 4 broad levels, and our current Ensembles and Course Days are streamed accordingly.

Beginning in the 2017-18 season we will now also be offering a CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMME. Our quick guide is here and more details below:

Q WHAT IS IT?

A A structured pathway through the 4 levels of learning. The pathway starts with CERTIFICATE PART 1, after which players can either continue up through the certificates or (subject to playing level) switch to the DIPLOMA. Each certificate corresponds to 2 seasons of study at playing levels 1-3. Each of the diploma parts corresponds to 2 seasons of study at levels 3-4.

Q WHAT IS IN THE PATHWAY?

A A combination of ensembles(s), 121 tutorials (either here at the venue or by Skype), course days, guided personal study and email contact.

Q HOW MUCH OF EACH?

A The Pathway is a more intensive and personalised way of combining our regular Jazz School UK activities (Ensembles, Course Days and 121 tuition) with guided personal study. The exact combination of activities to make up the season's work will depend on the requirements of the individual player, although generally we would expect each Certificate/Diploma student to be doing one regular ensemble, an Easter or Summer Course and some Theory Shed or Repertoire Days, as well as having regular individual lessons and email contact, and in any case for the contact hours in each season to amount to 120 hours. In practical terms this would generally work out at 2 visits per month to Jazz School UK and 10 hours per week of guided personal study.

Q WHAT ARE THE FEES AND PAYMENT ARRANGEMENTS?

A If payment is by term in 6 instalments (2 x September £650, 2 x January £550, 2 x May £550) the cost of each certificate or diploma part is £3500. Or with 24 monthly instalments of £150 the cost is £3600.
