GENERAL INFORMATION

The venue is the Shoefactory at Rushden, a beautiful Victorian building (with a grand piano in all three playing spaces), which is also the home of Jazz School UK founders Nick Weldon and Andra Sparks. More details, maps and links can be found on our About Us page. The Gollum Ensembles run on Sundays 10.30am-4.30pm.

prices

The Season Fee for the Ensemble Programme is £560. Payment in advance or in instalments.

Fees includes annual membership bringing 20% discount on fees for workshops, 121 lessons and additional ensembles. Pricing is calculated on the basis of the fixed costs of running each ensemble, so no refunds are possible for missed sessions. However, an alternative ensemble or Theory Shed day may be offered where a suitable place is available.

ensemble INFORMATION

The Gollum 1 Ensemble will be working through repertoire and the associated specific skills and theory points from Jazz School UK Levels 1 - ie basic jazz harmony, rhythmic concepts and ensemble and improvising skills. Ensemble members can read more about the different levels in the members area.

The courses are for players of any instrument, with or without jazz playing experience. You do need to have fairly good instrumental ability, though, and some jazz listening history.

While we will be aiming to internalise as much as possible of the season repertoire (this makes improvising so much easier!) we also have a season learning target - 2 core standards (marked with an asterix) BY HEART!

This season we have also slightly tweaked the format of the Gollum ensembles - we are now running separate Tune Workshops for rhythm section and frontline in the morning in order to look at specific areas which we haven't been able to cover adequately before, and going back into the playing groups for the two afternoon sessions.

Both Gollum playing groups are currently full for the season (we start allocating the places in April/May) but we are opening up the morning sessions to a small number of players from the reserve list. Dates and prices and the signup form for these tune workshops can be found here. (We also highly recommend our Theory Shed workshops and Jazz Beginner/Improver Weekends)
