I GOT RHYTHM

One of the most used forms in jazz, I Got Rhythm has evolved to reflect the changing improvising concepts of new jazz generations. This course will show you all the angles!

LISTENING SKILLS

(October-December 2021) 6 sessions £90 Tutor ARNIE SOMOGYI

Arnie says... 'Jazz Unwrapped' - a guided 'deep listening' session in which historic recordings are scrutinised in detail, focusing on the inner workings of some of the great jazz line ups. Participants will examine performance techniques and learn how individual musicians integrate to create a unified band 'sound'.

TRANSCRIPTION SKILLS

(October-December 2021) 6 sessions £90 Tutor ALEX MERRITT

Learning to recognise by ear basic chord sounds and movements, melodies in relation to a key centre and rhythms in relation to pulse and meter, we then apply this knowledge in the transcription and analysis of some classic jazz solos. Level 1 for transcription beginners, Level 2 for those with some experience.

AXIS THEORY

(January-February 2022) 6 sessions £90 Tutor NICK WELDON

Devised by a Bartok scholar, the Axis Grid has also proved a very useful tool for jazz musicians in the understanding of harmonic relations all around the 12-tone system. Boggle up, everyone!

ESSENTIAL PIANO VOICINGS

(January-February 2022) 6 sessions £90 Tutor NICK WELDON

Experienced jazz pianists often improvise voicings by a process of hearing and calculation in real time. Don't even think about it! First you must learn two basic systems, one with roots and one without, through the keys. These are your voicings dues.

RHYTHMIC ORIGINS

(March-April 2022) 6 sessions £90 Tutor NICK WELDON

Blues, jazz, latin and groove musics derive ultimately from the polyrhythmic drum layers of the ancient cultures of West Africa. Prepare to unlearn 4/4!

JAZZ HISTORY

(March-May 2022) 12 sessions £180 Tutor NICK WELDON

As well as identifying the musical specifics of the various genres of jazz, we also treat jazz more broadly as a cultural fusion, and trace it back to the earliest beginnings of human music.

JAZZ ARRANGING

(February-June 2022) 16 sessions £240 Tutor STEVE WATERMAN

This 16 lesson course focuses on writing for medium/large ensembles - from three or four frontline instruments up to a full big band. The topics covered include: melodic interpretation, counter melodies, backing figures, introductions and endings, passing chords, voice leading, upper structures, writing for commonly used instruments, rhythm section parts. Each lesson includes an exercise leading to the writing of an arrangement for a full big band.

BLUES

(June-July 2022) 6 sessions £90 Tutor NICK WELDON

This is primarily a course about Blues Form. We do touch on blues sound and feeling, and the hows and whys of blues expression, but we are mostly concerned to trace the development of the blues form from its early one chord beginnings through to the complexities of bebop blues and beyond. Modern players use all varieties!

HARMONIC PATTERNS

(June-July 2022) 8 sessions £120 Tutor NICK WELDON

In order to improvise freely we must be able to internalise the form, and to do this we need to recognise the harmonic patterns of which most tunes are made. In different keys and different combinations. This is an essential jazz skill!
